Purple Potato (winter hardy)

Pre-order Plants for Spring 2025 Shipping

Welcome to the Food Forest Farm plant shop! Here you’ll find many of the plants we’ve been growing in the nursery since 2010. These plants will come to you healthy and ready for their new home.

All of our plants are multi-functional, that is, some perennial vegetables can be eaten by a human, or livestock (leaf hay), or be grown as mulch for biomass, and more! You can look at “All” of the plants, or filter with the navigation bar.

Perennial Vegetables: edible roots, leaves, shoots, buds, seeds that come from perennial herbs, shrubs, and trees

Fruit: edible sweet goodness

Leaf Hay: plants to grow and feed to livestock like cattle, sheep, goats and rabbits

Biomass: herbs, grasses, shrubs and trees that grow fast and can be cut and used as mulch, grow soil, fuel stoves and compost piles

Purple Potato (winter hardy)

$20.00

One order equals 10 tubers. An all purple potato skin and flesh. Small to medium tuber, some long, some round. Can overwinter in climate zone 5b/6a. Strong disease resistance. We were gifted this glorious potato from our friends at Edible Acres. They've been growing it for a long time, yet it is new to us. Some highlights to share, from Sean Dembrosky:

"This phenomenally hardy and beautiful plant (dense foliage with distinct blue hues throughout) also has high value in the kitchen. Their dark rich blue/purple color is strong on the skin and likewise in the flesh. They cook to a dark rich color and confer deep, earthy, nutty flavors to a dish. Their dense pigment is almost certainly from super high anthocyanin content, making them a border line medicinal tuber!"

We are growing them to see how they do in our landscape over time, and if they perennialize for us. And we look forward to cooking and eating some this year! Limited supplies available.
